Dr. Dre admits he's a big fan of Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us," but, for him, it's personal.
The veteran rapper and producer explained his affinity for K.Dot's diss track towards Drake in the debut episode of The Unusual Suspects With Kenya Barris and Malcolm Gladwell, which arrived on Thursday, January 30. According to Billboard, the Aftermath founder spoke about the record after Barris brought up Lamar's "Pop Out" concert on Juneteenth last year at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. Dre made a surprise appearance at the show and helped introduce the song, but that's not the only reason he loves it so much.
“I love that record,” Dre began. “I’ma say this on camera. I don’t want to get negative. My whole s**t is about being positive and moving forward and all that s**t, but the fact I heard Drake say something negative about Kendrick’s wife and his kids, that made me say, ‘Ah, adios!'”
Dre is referring to the series of shots Drake aimed at Kendrick Lamar during their high-profile rap battle last year. While dissing the Compton native, Drizzy also fueled rumors about an affair between Lamar's fiancée Whitney Alford and his business partner Dave Free. He claimed Free was the actual father of Lamar's kid in songs like "The Heart Pt. 6," "Family Matters," and "Push Ups." Dre believes those bars went too far.
Kendrick Lamar might perform "Not Like Us" during his upcoming performance during the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show in New Orleans next month. So far, SZA is one of his confirmed guests. Will Dr. Dre make another appearance at the big game? We'll have to wait and see. In the meantime, you can catch new episodes of The Unusual Suspects With Kenya Barris and Malcolm Gladwell on Audible every Thursday.
